The structure is inspired by a snowflake, like the "Eis" (German for "ice") part of "Eisfunke", and by a spark, for the "Funke" (well, German for "spark") part.

The outer sparks are laid out such that their inner beams form a non-continuous hexagon, or a orthogonal cube together with the main beams, if you only look at the right lines.

The "spark" can be seen as a fractal: start with a six-pointed bar star/asterisk, replace all its ends with stars and repeat recursively. The second iteration is the spark used in the logo.

Incidentally, this corresponds to the well-known [Koch snowflake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koch_snowflake) where instead of an asterisk we start of with a hexagram. The points of the snowflake correspond to the ends of the sparks.

LaTeX code for constructing these fractals using [L-systems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system) can be found in `src/fractal.tex`. Some pretty snowflakes using the same technique can be found [here](https://git.eisfunke.com/document/snowflakes).

This repo contains a number of variants in different colors, with and without shadows, and with and without the ice background. You can view the latest PNGs [here](https://document.pages.eisfunke.com/logo/).

The main variant has a white flake, an orange (look at my [palette](https://git.eisfunke.com/document/palette) for the exact color and variants) outer circle, all with a drop shadow on an ice background.

The beautiful [ice background](src/ice.png) used in some versions is a slightly edited version of ["The ice highway" by Ian Mackenzie](https://www.flickr.com/photos/madmack/2410967721/). The picture is available under a [Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/) license. Thanks for this great photograph!

All variants of the logo are in SVG vector format, that means they can be freely scaled. The SVGs are carefully hand-written for pixel-perfectness and conciseness (and satisfying my OCD). The original drafts were done in Inkscape.
